A major advantage of ITS Products: Speed Limit Enforcement Cameras

Speed limit enforcement is an ITS product utilized by authorities in a variety of countries to cut down on traffic-related accidents, and to enforce local speed laws for roads and highways. Speed limit enforcement cameras are far from a new technology. In fact, many types of speed cameras were invented in the 1950’s-1960’s. However, ITS products, and related technology has evolved quite a bit since those days.

Speed limit enforcement cameras today

Current methods of speed limit enforcement may include the use of ITS products such as RADAR, VASCAR, or LIDAR, as well as incorporate the use of number-plate recognition systems. Mobile speed cameras, as well as fixed speed cameras measure the time taken for a vehicle to pass between two points. These cameras are known as ANPR cameras, or automatic number plate recognition cameras. The name comes from the fact that these speed cameras use infrared cameras, which are linked to a computer to read the vehicle’s registration details.

ITS products such as radar speed guns use the Doppler effect by directing a microwave signal at vehicles. LIDAR speed guns use the time of flight of laser pulses to determine a vehicle’s speed. Infra-red light sensors are also used, such as with TIRTL (the infra-red traffic logger) to gauge speed.
The change to digital technology has truly revolutionized the ITS product industry for speed camerasincluding their maintenance, and processing times for transferring data to office headquarters to issue traffic citations. Currently, images from speed cameras can be processed, and uploaded to the main office within seconds. Optical character recognition systems are then used to read the vehicle’s license plate number.

In Pinal County, Arizona in 2008, Paul Babeau won the election for County Sherriff after campaigning to eliminate speed cameras.

The National Motorists Association in the U.S., and the Motorists Against Detection in the United Kingdom are groups that fight against speed limit enforcement cameras. These, and other groups, claim that speed limit enforcement cameras are used mostly as a source of revenue by local police departments, rather than to enforce traffic rules. On the other hand, a meta-analysis showed that automated speed enforcement ticketing machines may have reduced the number of traffic-related injuries and deaths.
